FAQ

The quick answers to the questions almost every Game Master asks when they first land on GameMasterBuddy: how to start, what it costs, why approval is required, whether you need to install anything, and what to do when the Master AI gets something wrong. If your answer isn't here, check the troubleshooting page or write to support.

How do I get started

GameMasterBuddy is in closed beta: first you sign up, then an administrator approves your access.

  1. Open the site and click Join the beta: you fill in a short form with your email.
  2. Wait for approval. When an admin enables you, you receive a confirmation email and your account moves from "pending" to free.
  3. Come back to the site and log in with Google (use the same email as your request).
  4. From then on you see the dashboard with all tools unlocked and your weekly credits.

While your account is "pending" you have 0 credits and the tools are locked: that's normal, just wait for approval.

Is it free

Most of GameMasterBuddy is free. All the table tools (dice, initiative tracker, generators, sheets, timer, notes), the Bench and the map editor (Cartographer) run in your browser: they use no credits and no AI server.

Credits are spent only for the features that use artificial intelligence:

  • the Master AI chat (answers cited from the manuals);
  • the DM helper in the Bench;
  • character Portraits;
  • One-shot Studio (adventure generation).

Credits use a double wallet: periodic credits recharge every week based on your tier (150, 750 or 3000), while purchased credits never expire. See the dedicated credits page for details.

Why do I need beta approval

We're in closed beta: we open access gradually to keep the AI servers' load under control and to follow who joins. That's why logging in with Google alone isn't enough: you first need a beta request and then the go-ahead from an administrator. It's a one-time step: once approved, you always log in with Google without repeating it.

The Master AI got a rule wrong: why

The chat doesn't make things up on its own: it searches the indexed manuals and then the AI writes the answer citing the sources. If it gives you a wrong answer or says "not found" when you know the content exists, there are two typical causes:

  • the content is not (yet) indexed in that manual or that setting;
  • the chosen setting points the search at the wrong manuals, or the question is too vague.

Try again by changing the setting, using the exact names as they appear in the manual, and rephrasing more specifically. The troubleshooting page explains what to check step by step.

Can I use it on a tablet Do I need to install anything

No, you don't need to install anything: GameMasterBuddy is a web app, it runs in your browser. You open it from a computer, tablet or phone by going to the site and logging in. The table tools and maps are designed mainly for a large screen (computer or big tablet), but the chat and the reference features work fine on mobile too. After an update, if something looks out of place, reload the page.
