Two editions (3.5 & 5e)

In GameMasterBuddy two editions of D&D coexist depending on what you're doing: the Master AI chat (and lore in general) reasons over D&D 3.5 manuals, while the sheet creator builds characters in 5e. This isn't an oversight and there's nothing to "fix" or line up: it's a deliberate design choice. This page explains why, so it doesn't catch you off guard when the chat talks "3.5" and your sheet is "5e".

What happens where

  • Master AI chat and lore → D&D 3.5. When you ask about the manuals, GMB searches and cites the indexed manuals, which are edition three-and-a-half (3.5). Sourced answers come from there.
  • Sheet creator → D&D 5e. When you create a character (generic or Eberron), the wizard works in fifth edition.

Why two editions

The reason is practical. GMB's historical core is the RAG, the system that indexes the PDF manuals and lets the chat answer citing sources. The manuals feeding that search are D&D 3.5: that's the material the Master AI can reliably ground its answers on.

The character creator, on the other hand, is meant for the sheet you take to the table today, and it's built on 5e rules, the most widely played edition.

Keeping the two separate gives you the best of both: rich, cited lore from the 3.5 manuals in the chat, and a modern 5e sheet for your character.

How to live with it at the table

  • Use the chat for lore, monsters, rules and setting ideas: answers come from the 3.5 manuals, with sources.
  • Use the creator to build and export your character sheet in 5e.
  • Don't expect the numbers to match between the two: a stat cited by the chat (3.5) and a value on your sheet (5e) may differ, and that's normal. Take lore from the chat and game mechanics from the sheet.

In short

If you see "3.5" in the chat's citations and "5e" in the creator, everything is fine: it's GMB's deliberate two-edition setup. The lore speaks the language of the indexed manuals; the sheet speaks the language you play in today.
